Description Sterling silver lidded ewer, vermeil silver interior, Queen Victoria, Samuel Smily Goldsmiths Alliance, London, 1868 This splendid lidded ewer is of unusual form, made of heavy gauge silver, it features smooth surfaces accentuated by bold decorative elements of floral and geometric motifs and cartouches on both sides of the ewer's body. A hinged lid with a domed surface and decorations that echo the body's theme. The handle features cast, chased and applied ornaments. Short spout, circular base. Vermeil silver interior. Sterling silver hallmarked with 5 marks: Maker's mark: Samuel Smily Goldsmiths Alliance Lion passant: hallmark of the alloy. Sterling standard guarantee control 925­/1000 Leopard's head with crown: city of London Date letter year: 1868 Duty mark: Queen Victoria's head Dimensions 33.5cm x 26cm x 20.5cm Weight 2,142gr Provenance Private collection Condition Slight signs of age-related wear and surface scratches.
