Description:
LUCA MOMBELLO (Orzivecchi, 1518/1520 - 1588/1596) Carved, gilded and polychrome wooden frame Gouache gilding in pure gold on red bole preparation Brescia, mid-16th century External 125x106 cm Rebate 104x87 cm Opening 101x84 cm Outer and inner parts of the frame carved with successive leaf motifs. Raised body, sculpted to depict elegant vegetal motifs, and centered by four angel heads with spread wings. Corners carved to depict acanthus leaves underlined by color. The frame, of refined execution in terms of carving, gilding, and polychromy, is the work of the Brescia artist Luca Mombello, a well-known painter of the Moretti school, who, in the first half of the 16th century, thanks to his talents, was also a skilled carver and frame maker.
