The work presented, depicting a splendid coastal view illuminated by the warm lights of sunset, shows the distinctive characteristics typical of the compositions of Charles François Grenier De Lacroix, one of the most important landscape painters of 18th-century European painting and a specialist in depicting seascapes. It is therefore attributable to one of the numerous students and collaborators active in his workshop.
Very similar versions of our composition can be found in the most important international museums and private collections, belonging to a large series of paintings that the master created, along with his collaborators, especially during his stay in Italy.
After his apprenticeship with Vernet in France, De Lacroix indeed collaborated with the master for several years in Rome, where he is documented until 1760, and later was certainly in Naples until 1776.
His seascapes were very fashionable at the time, a genre favored by the nobility from Great Britain and Northern Europe who came to Italy for the Grand Tour, and were sold as souvenirs of the trip.
Thus, they were often commissioned not just as decorative elements, but were meant to represent a gallery of images of the most significant places or views encountered during their long stays.
The scene immortalized, although a product of the author's imagination, is inspired by the suggestive Mediterranean coasts with a port, enlivened by small, lively figures of fishermen with their moored boats. The clear sunlight, the rosy clouds, and the calm sea surface contribute to the harmonious and idyllic atmosphere of the work.
The painting is in good condition of preservation with a beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame.
