Carved and gilded wood, 51 x 47 x 43 cm
The front is presented as a true architectural composition: in the center, within an arched niche, stands a bunch of grapes rendered with great plasticity, flanked by vine leaves. The viticultural motif, of classical origin and strong symbolic value - evoking abundance, wisdom, and spirituality - fits perfectly into the nineteenth-century decorative repertoire with a neoclassical and neobaroque taste. Rosette medallions on the sides of the niche complete the central division. The crest is dominated by an elegant plume of finely carved acanthus leaves that open like a fan, giving the ensemble dynamism and monumentality. The base of the reading surface is enriched by a frieze with vegetal and floral motifs. On the back, the easel support mechanism with an adjustable crosspiece reveals a solid and functional construction, resting on four gilded feet. The gilded finish, achieved through a technique involving the application of transparent gold-colored lacquer over a silver or tin foil base, gives the work its characteristic amber warmth, now enhanced by the patina of time. A valuable piece likely intended for a liturgical context or a noble residence.
