Rare porcelain sugar bowl (originally with lid) of a lobed shape, with a slightly everted rim, ring base and polychrome painted decoration articulated within four shaped rectangular reserves in brown and gold; on the two sides are floral branches in a naturalistic style, following the Germanisches Blumen (Deutsche Blumen) lexicon reinterpreted in an Italian key, while inside the two main, figured reserves, scenes from Jacques Stella's engraving cycle "Les Jeux et Plaisirs de l’Enfance" are reproduced.
The entire work, published in Paris around 1657, consists of 50 sheets dedicated to the most varied children's games; each of them proposes itself as an educational metaphor for a different type of ability and as an antechamber to adult life, governed by rules. The subjects depicted here are on one side children engaged in archery, whose moral interpretation emphasizes skill, aim and discipline; on the opposite side, children riding a goat alluding to balance, trust and body control.
