Lodewijk Toeput, known in Italy as Ludovico Pozzoserrato, was born in Flanders around 1550. After a stay that took him to Venice, Florence, and Rome, he settled in Treviso in 1582, where he remained until his death. Skillful and learned, he was able to fuse the Flemish tradition, in which influences from Hieronymus Francken I are recognizable, with Venetian colorism of Titianesque origin, becoming the main exponent of late Northern Mannerism in the Serenissima. Some works are preserved in Venetian museums, while numerous paintings and frescoes are found in the churches of the Marca Trevigiana.
The painting fits into the vein of amorous and pastoral subjects favored by Titian, recalling themes analogous to those of the "Nymph and Shepherd" at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the "Pastoral Concert" at the Louvre. A precise comparison is offered by the large "Concert in the Garden" housed in the L. Bailo Civic Museum of Treviso. A group of ladies and knights in late 16th-century attire comes to life in the foreground within a dense and shady wood, opening up in the distance to a bright clearing with figures strolling. The brown and earthy palette of the undergrowth contrasts with the shimmering reflections of the clothing, rendered with the technical skill typical of the master. The small figure of a dog in the shade on the right and barely discernible architectures in the background complete a scene of elegant and measured courtly pleasure.
