English painter (late 18th century) - The Connoisseur and Tired Boy.
Description:
English painter (late 18th century) - The Connoisseur and Tired Boy. 39.5 x 32 cm (unframed) - 46 x 38 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a carved wooden frame. The work reprises the composition of the satirical print by Henry Robert Morland (London c.1730 - London 1797) engraved by Phillip Dawe and published by Robert Sayer in 1773. The painting depicts two figures in a nocturnal interior: an art connoisseur carefully examining a painted landscape, illuminated by a candle, while behind him a young assistant yawns conspicuously. The subject derives from the work of Henry Robert Morland, a London painter active in the second half of the eighteenth century, known for genre scenes in artificial light and for an ironic vein that runs through part of his work. Dawe's print, published by Sayer in 1773, had wide distribution and inspired several pictorial versions: the engrossed connoisseur and the bored boy embody a good-natured critique of the world of art collectors and connoisseurs, a central figure in 18th-century British visual culture. The play of light, with the candle as the sole light source, fits into the tradition of candlelight painting, which was very popular in the Anglo-Saxon world at the time.
