Decorative lacquered wood plate with "Arte Povera" print applications. Turin, 18th century.
Ø 51 cm.
A rare decorative wooden plate, an example of the Piedmontese "lacca povera" (poor lacquer) tradition of the 18th century. The technique involved applying small, hand-colored engraved prints to a wooden base, subsequently protected by layers of transparent varnish, as an alternative to expensive Oriental lacquers. The composition is organized in concentric registers: at the center, within a circle on a turquoise background, a bucolic landscape with trees and architecture; in the middle band on a vermilion red background, four large, lobed cartouches enclose architectural capriccios with bridges, obelisks, and ruins, enriched with naturalistic elements. The outer band echoes the same repertoire in smaller formats, set within gilded reserves on a red background.
