The Holy Family, Circle of Domenico Piola (Genoa 1627 -1703)  Translated
Description:
Circle of Domenico Piola (Genoa 1627 -1703) The Holy Family Oil on canvas (83 x 68 cm. - in antique frame 99 x 82 cm.) Link of the work In the pleasant devotional work offered, which depicts a classic Holy Family, the Virgin is portrayed with a serene attitude, tenderly holding the Child in her arms, and Saint Joseph behind her, lovingly observing the scene. The focus of the composition in this graceful canvas is centered on non-verbal communication, conveyed through the exchange of glances and movements, and the attitudes and gestures between mother and child. Their searching gaze, as well as the gesture of their two hands crossing, make the composition an emblem of maternal love, rendered by the artist with great poetry. The stylistic analysis of the canvas, attributed to a painter of the Genoese school active in the 17th century, allows us to find strong correlations with some paintings by Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627-1703), an absolute protagonist of Genoese Baroque culture, during a period of intense productivity. Piola headed the most important painting workshop in the city at the time, known as "Casa Piola," where his sons Paolo Gerolamo and Anton Maria also collaborated. His production specialized in paintings of strong decorative value, profane and allegorical, intended for the decoration of Genoese patrician palaces. The interpretation of the canvas highlights the quick, almost sketched touch and the use of thin, fluid color, typical of his painting style, characterized by a 'modern' language, updated with the latest innovations from centers like Bologna and Rome, and therefore highly appreciated by the wealthy clientele in Genoa in the 17th century. The painting is in good condition, complete with a beautiful antique gilded frame which shows some minor losses consistent with its age. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The work is sold with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic sheet. We handle and organize the transportation of purchased works, both within Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers; it is our duty to point out that, given the delicacy of certain antique frames, there is a possibility of minor damage to the gilding during transport, despite the utmost care taken in packaging. It is also possible to view the painting at our gallery in Riva del Garda; we would be delighted to welcome you and show you our collection of works.
