GIACOMO FRANCESCO CIPPER. (Feldkirch, Austria, 1664 - Milan, 1736) Portrait of an old man.  Translated
Description:
GIACOMO FRANCESCO CIPPER. (Feldkirch, Austria, 1664 - Milan, 1736) Oil on canvas, cleaned and relined. Canvas dimensions 42.5x35 cm. This painting is consistent with the characteristics of the works of Giacomo Francesco Cipper, also known as "il Todeschini". The painting depicts an old man in left profile, seated at a table, bringing a dark terracotta bowl or plate to his mouth. The figure occupies almost the entire surface of the canvas, with a close-up compositional framing that leaves no room for environmental elements: the background is completely neutral, a uniform and deep brown-black, from which the figure emerges thanks to an intense side light coming from off-camera to the left. With careful observation of a point of light, the fireplace can be faintly seen, where a pot hanging or resting on the fire is noted, a detail of great effect. On the table, (photo 2) rendered with a white-ivory surface in strong foreshortening, a dark glass bottle, a piece of bread, a cheese, and an onion are carefully arranged, along with a knife with a shining blade, an accessory still life of great naturalistic precision. The figure wears a dark brown cloth jacket with signs of wear, a light apron, and whitish puffed sleeves with tight cuffs. With his left hand, he holds a stick that rests on his hat, held in place by his arm. The physiognomy of the old man is of extraordinary quality: an almost bald skull (photo 1) with white hair at the nape, cheeks with a well-groomed white beard, a well-defined nose, and a semi-lowered eye in concentration. The profile is rendered with remarkable luministic mastery, with transitions from the brightly lit areas (skull, cheekbone, nose) to deep shadows (orbit, neck, shoulder) achieved through superimposed transparent glazes. The painting depicts a popular genre scene, characteristic of Cipper's production for Italian and European commissions. The style aims to capture the vitality and smiles in humble life, rather than desolation. He portrays scenes of daily life and still lifes, often set in taverns or humble contexts, which establish the subject of the poor/old man as a theme of moral dignity and social realism. The quality of the rendering of the face (photo 1) is of a very high psychological and luministic level, not that of a mere follower, but of a master trained on top-tier Northern models. The composition, with the figure cut at half-length and the tabletop in foreshortening, recalls the solutions of Teniers and caravaggesque-oriented Lombard painters. Condition: good; the oxidized varnish reduces the readability of the light tones; cleaning would make the work more legible, increase its commercial value, and restore its original chromaticity.  Translated
