A.A. Lejeune (active in the 18th century) attributed - Trompe l'oeil with assignats and documents from the French Revolution.
Description:
A.A. Lejeune (active in the 18th century) attributed - Trompe l'oeil with assignats and documents from the French Revolution. 61 x 48 cm (unframed) - 69.5 x 56.5 cm (framed). Pen, brown ink, and watercolor on paper mounted on board, in a wooden frame. The genre of trompe l'oeil with scattered papers and documents has a long tradition in European painting, but it takes on a particular significance when the subject consists of the assignats of the French Republic: the paper currency issued between 1789 and 1796, guaranteed by national assets confiscated from the clergy and nobility, became a symbol and instrument of the Revolution before collapsing into catastrophic devaluation. The board attributed to Lejeune precisely depicts the apparent disorder of these documents, overlapped and piled up with skillful variations in denominations and nominal values: from a few sols to ten thousand francs. The pen and watercolor work, done on paper then applied to a rigid support, carefully simulates the typographical and chromatic differences of the various types of assignats, recalling the taste for documentary illusionism prevalent in late 18th-century visual culture. An object of uncommon historical and collector's interest. Condition report: Good condition of the paper support. There are some localized abrasions and yellowing due to the aging of the paper.
