ANCIENT PAINTINGS, NEOCLASSICAL PROFILE PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN, OIL ON CANVAS, 19TH CENTURY. (QR741)
Description:
(QR741)
The "Quadri Antichi" (Ancient Paintings) category presents an oil on canvas painting depicting a female portrait in profile, from the 19th century, executed in the Neoclassical style. The artwork features a young woman with harmonious features, portrayed in profile, with her hair gathered and an ornamental crown reminiscent of classical antiquity iconography. The clothing, consisting of a rosy and ivory colored robe, evokes the female figures of the Greco-Roman era, suggesting an idealized and symbolic representation rather than a realistic portrait of an identifiable person. The dark background highlights the face and lends depth and solemnity to the composition. French Antiquity.
The painting is characterized by soft brushwork, delicate chiaroscuro transitions, and a refined rendering of the skin tones. The ancient artwork is signed in the lower left by U. Bourgeois, a French painter active in the 19th-century French art scene. Léon Pierre Urbain Bourgeois (1842-1911) was born in Nevers and died in Paris. He was a student of important masters, including Alexandre Cabanel, a well-known academic painter of the time. He studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, one of France's most important art schools. In 1865, he exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, the most significant official exhibition in France at the time. He won the Prix de Rome in 1863.
The painting is set in a beautiful, coeval, finely crafted gilded frame of pure gold leaf, which enhances its historical and decorative character. The frame and the oil painting have been meticulously and professionally restored.
