19th Century, Devotional panel with religious scenes  Translated
Description:
19th Century Devotional panel with religious scenes Boxwood, 30x19 cm; total 51x26 cm This refined carved boxwood work represents a cultured expression of 19th-century Neo-Gothic taste, a period when the rediscovery of the Middle Ages became the privileged language for private devotion and high artistic craftsmanship. The central panel, characterized by the extraordinary plastic density typical of boxwood, is organized around a cross surrounded by six medallions depicting meticulously crafted biblical scenes: among these, one can recognize the Nativity of Christ, the Adoration of the Magi, the Visitation of Saint Elizabeth, Jesus among the Doctors, and the Presentation at the Temple. The sacred narrative expands vertically, starting from the upper pediment populated by figures depicting the Annunciation, down to the complex and solemn depiction of the Last Supper in the lower register, where the carver demonstrates rare skill in managing reduced-scale proportions. On the sides of the composition, on special shelves, stand the figures of Christ bound to the column and a kneeling man: the latter, depicted in an attitude of profound contrition, can be identified as Saint Peter at the moment of his repentance. The work is conceived as a domestic altar, an object intended for the furnishing of a private chapel or a noble study, designed to encourage close contemplation thanks to the contrasts between the partial polychromy of the figures and the warm tone of the wood. The entire sculptural apparatus is set within a gilded wooden frame that accentuates its monumental character. The pointed arch structure, adorned with quatrefoil tracery and bundled pilasters, is not merely decorative but a true miniature architecture, capable of elevating the object to a symbol of the refined opulence and romantic spirituality typical of the 19th century.  Translated
