The painting examined here is to be attributed to the production of the workshop of Giovanni Stanchi (Rome 1608 - 1675); the Stanchis (founder Giovanni, along with brothers Niccolò and Angelo) constituted one of the most fervent still-life workshops in Baroque Rome from the 1630s onwards, sought after by the most important aristocratic families, from the Colonnas to the Chigis and Rospigliosis, and present in Medici collections since the end of the century.
Extremely varied in type but stylistically coherent, the Stanchi production can be divided according to the subjects offered: first and foremost, garlands, of which the present canvas is a quality example, linked to the Flemish model made famous in Rome by Daniel Seghers, and probably largely attributable to Giovanni. A thorough study of the work's style can also approach the works of Niccolò, active in Rome for almost the entire 17th century, the younger brother and head of the workshop after Giovanni's death.
Regarding the portrait of the Virgin placed in the center of the garland, it should be noted that in this type of composition, figures were often entrusted to a specialized painter, different from the flower painter. Carlo Maratta (Camerano 1625 – Rome 1713), for example, often collaborated with important workshops, including the Stanchis and Mario Nuzzi, completing their floral compositions with his religious subjects (Florence, Galleria Corsini, The Virgin by Carlo Maratta within a garland, see details).
This is the case, for example, of the magnificent mirrors executed by Giovanni Stanchi in 1670 for the gallery of Palazzo Colonna in collaboration with Carlo Maratta (Garland of flowers with four putti; and Vase of flowers with five putti), in competition with Mario dei Fiori, author of the other two; regarding Nicolò, the younger brother who headed the workshop after Giovanni's death, the mirrors in Palazzo Borghese, executed in 1675 in collaboration with Ciro Ferri.
