Description:
A wonderful pair of chairs from the early Viennese Biedermeier period. Vienna, c. 1815-20, close to the circle of cabinetmakers around Joseph Danhauser, veneered in light walnut feather with sober elegance and a line that "conquers time," seeming to anticipate Bauhaus functionalism by over 100 years, as is typical of Viennese furniture from the Biedermeier period, close to the great cabinetmaker-designer Joseph Danhauser. Works in practically intact condition, consolidated and polished with shellac applied with a pad over the original patina using museum-standard techniques. Original upholstery, sanitized and reupholstered in elegant and luxurious jacquard fabric. Height 89.5 cm - seat height 47 cm, width 48 cm, max depth 51 cm, max seat depth 46 cm. Joseph Ulrich Danhauser, a great Viennese cabinetmaker and designer, documented his range of products in an extensive illustrated catalog, parts of which (approx. 2,500 pieces) have survived and are now housed in the MAK (Austrian Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna). This catalog includes, among others, 153 chair models, 56 sofas, 179 types of chandeliers, and 124 draperies. All these models were consecutively numbered. He boasted a high-ranking clientele from throughout the Austrian monarchy and Germany. The company had offices and sales agencies in Graz, Prague, and Budapest. The most prestigious work commissioned to Danhauser was the renovation of Archduke Charles' Palace (today's Albertina, home to an important Viennese museum) around 1822. Danhauser's furniture factory holds a prominent position in the history of Viennese furniture making and interior decoration. Danhauser's drawings allow us to follow the development of the Viennese furniture style, which was initially based on French models, such as those created by Percier and Fontaine, but soon gained its own precise and refined autonomy. Danhauser's exceptional quality and uniqueness as a furniture creator lie in the harmonious combination of concreteness and abstraction, functionality and emotion. Thus, he took on the role of a mediator between individuality and anonymity and became one of the most important inspirations for the modern avant-garde movement. The Danhauser manufactory was founded in 1814 by the sculptor and cabinetmaker Joseph Ulrich Danhauser (1780-1829), father of the painter Joseph Danhauser. It was one of the first companies in Vienna operating in the field of interior decoration. Having been granted a special production license, Danhauser was able to integrate all trades related to interior decoration with their respective specializations and thus carry out the necessary work under one roof. These included, first and foremost, furniture production and upholstery, the production of lighting fixtures, metalworking, and the creation of elaborate draperies. It is a benchmark in the history of design and furnishings. His very rare original creations that have survived to this day are preserved in a few museums, castles, major antique dealers, or prestigious private collections. Look at the last image on this page, which is a computer-generated fantasy simulation where the original works are virtually imagined in a high-end modern interior design context. N.B. The other furnishings in the photo, excluding our original works on offer, are not ours/available but are computer-simulated. Associated virtually with them, a stunning "modernity," luminosity, and abstraction emerge from works conceived over two centuries ago. With a great touch of class and elegance to the whole. The high Viennese cabinetmaking of the Neoclassical period (1770 - 1830), with its sober and minimalist elegance and precious, light woods, strongly aligns with the lines of contemporary modern furniture. Even a single, perfect, original piece can serve as a focal point for high-level contemporary interiors! The early design of the Viennese masters of the early Biedermeier period = clean lines, lightness, veneers with precious woods, great executive skill. Compact dimensions and compatibility with modern apartments. A feeling of everyday and functional elegance. Perfect for minimalist contemporary interiors. A unique piece for discreet and refined luxury. For these reasons too, along with their rarity, original, intact Viennese works from the period, prototypes of modernism, are destined for significant economic revaluation over time and also represent a perfect investment. In accordance with the provisions of the New Italian Cultural Heritage Code, the selling company provides, concurrently with the sale, a detailed written photographic guarantee of the originality and provenance of the works sold. The data used to describe the works and contained in the written guarantees are express determinations resulting from accurate and documented technical/historical/artistic investigations, including expert appraisals. Copying and duplication for commercial purposes or to describe other works for sale, even if considered somehow similar, is prohibited.
