Very rare Levantine game set with a transformable table and four armchairs, finely inlaid.
Description:
Refined and very rare game set comprising a table and four armchairs, an extraordinary example of Levantine cabinetry, likely from the Syrian region, characterized by exceptionally high-quality inlay. The work employs a wide range of precious woods—olive, rosewood, ebony, palisander, fruitwoods, sandalwood—enhanced with bone and mother-of-pearl inlays, while the supporting structure is made of fir, as is typical of Middle Eastern production from the early 20th century. The table follows the model of 18th-century English furniture, reinterpreted with an Eastern sensibility. At the base, there is a small storage compartment, useful for keeping game pieces or small gaming accessories; furthermore, the two apron panels of the table conceal two small drawers perfectly integrated into the decoration, almost invisible at first glance. The armchairs fully express the Middle Eastern soul of the set: * carved legs reminiscent of typical Arab art forms; * pointed arch connections, a distinctive element of Islamic architecture; * enveloping backrests alternating inlaid panels with openwork sections featuring elegantly turned columns. Each side of the table and armchairs features different decorations: sometimes simpler, sometimes of the highest quality with tiny tesserae and a measured, elegant use of mother-of-pearl, which adds luminosity without excess. Table opening system (3 technical phases) The table is equipped with an ingenious opening system articulated in three successive phases, which progressively reveal its various functions: 1. From console table to game table In its closed configuration, it appears as a console table. The opening of the top allows for a game table with a fully inlaid surface. 2. Appearance of the chessboard The game surface can be lifted and folded, revealing a finely inlaid chessboard on the inner side, crafted with high-quality woods and materials. 3. Access to backgammon The chessboard, in turn, can be lifted to access the third level: a fully inlaid backgammon board, with geometric patterns and colors typical of Levantine production. All game boards are made entirely of inlay, with an executive quality rarely found today. The top and side panels are a continuous virtuosity of Greek frets, geometric patterns, and micro-tesserae, where the eye gets lost in the complexity of the details. The set is accompanied by a CITES certificate, which attests to the presence of bone and mother-of-pearl and certifies its marketability.
