Mario Schifano, an artist with a rebellious and sharp spirit, is today considered one of the most prolific painters of the post-World War II era. He immediately attracted critical attention by creating monochrome paintings that gave the impression of a photographic screen which would later incorporate numbers, letters, road signs, and brands like Esso and Coca-Cola. He lived in New York, where he associated with Frank O'Hara, Jasper Johns, and Andy Warhol.
