Of remarkable stylistic perfection, the painting portrays the Madonna's face with beautiful features, slightly in profile and modestly turned downwards.
The artist, endowed with great painterly skill, is to be identified within the extensive circle of artists orbiting the creative genius of Guido Reni, who had numerous excellent interpreters of his extraordinary inventions among his pupils.
Indeed, the painting, previously attributed to Sassoferrato, is among the many images of the Virgin Mary created by the great Master.
The particular grace of the work was well-suited for private devotion and was often reproduced to adorn the homes of the most important Bolognese Families. In this case, the finesse of the painting is evident, which should not be confused with the many copies of modest quality depicting the same subject.
The optimal dimensions and the luminous coloring of both the flesh tones and the deep blue mantle make this painting very pleasant and easy to place.
