Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676 - Venice 1730) - Idyllic landscape with river and mill.  Translated
Description:
Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676 - Venice 1730) - Idyllic landscape with river and mill. 44 x 60 cm (unframed) - 57 x 74 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame. Expert reports: Prof. Bernard Aikema (critical essay attached). Marco Ricci, nephew of the figure painter Sebastiano Ricci, is among the protagonists of Venetian landscape painting in the early 18th century, active in Venice and England. His work includes oil and tempera paintings depicting rural scenes in a pre-Alpine environment, with clear reminiscences of the Belluno region, his native city. The painting, as Professor Aikema observes, presents itself as an idyllic rural scene: from the arboreal wing on the left, the composition unfolds towards the bridge over the river, the small village with the mill, and the robust square tower dominating the hamlet. Along the banks, small figures are engaged in laundry or simply resting, with mountains in the background. Recurring elements — the group of trees, the bridge, the square tower — appear regularly in Ricci's work and find direct comparison, in terms of dimensions and composition, with a tempera in a private collection in Treviso (A. Scarpa Sonino, Marco Ricci, Milan 1991, pp. 228-229, cat. 43), datable to the artist's full maturity, between the end of the second and the beginning of the third decade of the 18th century.
