Attributed to Francesco Simonini (Parma 1686 - Venice 1753) - Port landscape with tower and figures.  Translated
Description:
Attributed to Francesco Simonini (Parma 1686 - Venice 1753) - Port landscape with tower and figures. 51.5 x 85.5 cm (unframed) - 57 x 91 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame. Francesco Simonini, a painter from Parma active mainly in Venice in the first half of the eighteenth century, is best known for his battle scenes and landscapes animated by figures, in which he demonstrated a sure mastery in rendering natural environments and human movement. The present painting depicts a river port landscape with a medieval tower in the center of the composition, against a background of mountainous terrain. In the foreground, along the bank, groups of common people, fishermen, travelers, and a pack donkey are animated, while to the left, sails and boats move across the calm waters. The genre figures, rendered with spontaneity and vivacity, recall the Venetian tradition of animated landscapes of the early eighteenth century, with stylistic affinities attributable to Simonini's circle for the type of figures and the construction of space in receding planes towards the luminous background.
