Polychrome wooden sculpture “Madonna and Child” - late 18th, early 19th century.
Important devotional sculpture in carved and polychrome wood depicting the Madonna and Child, created between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, likely from a workshop in the alpine region or Northern Italy, where the tradition of sacred wood carving achieved notable expressive quality.
The Virgin is depicted standing, with a solemn yet maternal bearing: her oval face, with slightly lowered eyes and a melancholic, contemplative expression, reveals a sensibility still tied to the late Baroque taste, but softened by more intimate and popular accents.
Her head is veiled by a large mantle, embellished with gold leaf gilding, which elegantly frames her face.
The drapery is one of the most significant elements of the work: the robe and mantle, rendered with deep, dynamic folds, create a refined play of chiaroscuro.
The coloring, still largely original, alternates intense green tones, warm ochres, and gilded highlights, now partially worn, revealing the underlying preparation and contributing to a material effect of great charm.
The Child Jesus, held on his Mother's left arm, is depicted nude according to traditional iconography, with a composed, frontal pose. The gesture of his hand on his chest evokes a blessing or a symbolically salvific attitude. The slightly stylized proportions and serious face give the figure an archaic and devotional character.
Of particular interest is the presence of the contemporary wooden base, also decorated, which harmoniously completes the ensemble and suggests an original purpose likely connected to a domestic altar or a small chapel.
The work exhibits an authentic antique patina, areas of polychrome loss, and traces of time that attest to its originality and enhance its historical value. These signs do not compromise the legibility of the sculpture but rather amplify its character and collector's appeal.
