Description:
Oil on canvas. The scene depicts an episode of a plea for clemency to a king: a man implores the king to grant grace to a young man about to be beheaded by two servants; curiously, at the king's feet lies a crowned head. The scene takes place in a camp near a city, with several soldiers observing, while the two prisoners are in civilian clothes, as are the servants wielding swords over the prisoner. The scene cannot be attributed to a specific biblical or historical event, but it certainly aims to portray the King's mercy contrasted with severe justice. The painting has undergone restoration and relining in the past. It is presented in an early 20th-century, regilded frame.
