18th Century Pastoral Concert Painting  Translated
Description:
Oil on board. The painting reprises the composition of a masterpiece by Titian (from 1510, currently at the Louvre Museum), but places it in a completely different landscape and develops it on the sides, with the introduction of a goat on the right and a faun playing the flute on the left. Furthermore, the four figures taken from Titian's work are shown reversed, probably because the author of our painting was inspired by an engraving. The central scene features two young men sitting side-by-side on a meadow, making music, accompanied by a young woman seen from behind while a second woman is drawing water from a marble basin. The two women present are both nude, barely covered by slipping cloaks, while the two men, who are talking amongst themselves, are dressed in period costumes. The subject is likely an allegory of poetry and music, with the two women of ideal beauty, who are like two unreal apparitions generated by the fantasy and inspiration of the two young men. The painting presented here shows traces of previous restorations. Currently, there are some paint losses and damage to the board.
