This splendid pair of paintings, executed with exceptional definition in the rendering of details, excellently highlight the unparalleled pictorial skills of the famous landscape masters of the Flemish school.
Among the dense ranks of these great artists, the BRUEGHEL group stood out for their exceptional skill and fervent imagination, a family of Belgian artists who perfectly interpreted this particular pictorial art, becoming disseminators of an artistic expression that had enormous success in the 17th century, and continued to evolve in subsequent centuries.
The simple and spontaneous joy of life of the peasants is described in a fairy-tale and sometimes grotesque manner with the use of decisive colors, typical of the Flemish Baroque, as can be observed in the pair of landscapes presented here.
The paintings in question particularly reflect the production of Jan Brueghel II the Younger (Brussels 1601- Antwerp 1678), son of Jan Brueghel the Elder, and father of Abraham Brueghel, who distinguished himself for his lavish still lifes.
Having trained with his father, after a trip to Italy that took him to Rome and Naples, Jan returned to Antwerp in 1625.
Here he established and became the director of a renowned and flourishing workshop, also working for numerous prestigious clients, including the court of Paris.
The author of the paintings is an excellent artist working in close contact with the Master, as evidenced by the stylistic perfection, the exceptional chromaticism, and the inimitable imagination in the description of the landscape.
The canvases published here, moreover of large size compared to the more common paintings on wood and copper, constitute an important example of the artistic production of his workshop.
It should be emphasized that paintings on canvas executed by Jan Brueghel and his collaborators are very rare and are found only in large-format landscapes.
The two works have great wall impact and are suitable for furnishing an important hall, arousing interest and curiosity in guests.
The state of conservation is excellent and the important original frames, lacquered with gilded profiles, perfectly complement the paintings.
