STORMY SEA AT TELLARO - OIL ON CANVAS - GIUSEPPE CASELLI (1893 - 1976
Description:
Artwork Description The painting captures Tellaro in one of its most spectacular moments: a storm surge. Composition: The village, with its characteristic Church of San Giorgio perched on the cliff, is set on the left, as if to resist the forces of nature. In the background, to the right, the profiles of Tino Island and Palmaria can be glimpsed. Style and Color: Caselli uses a textured and dynamic brushstroke, typical of his mature period. The waves are rendered with broad strokes of white, blue, and emerald green, conveying the sense of movement and the foam of the water. The sky, heavy with clouds but with patches of light, reflects the restlessness and beauty of the Ligurian Sea. Atmosphere: The work is not a simple postcard view but a celebration of the power of nature, a theme that Caselli obsessively explored throughout his career. Dimensions: 112 x 80 cm Period: 1950s. Biographical notes on Giuseppe Caselli (1893–1976) Giuseppe "Pino" Caselli was a central figure in 20th-century Ligurian art. Here are some highlights of his life: Training and Influences: Born in Luzzara (Reggio Emilia), he moved to La Spezia at a very young age. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and was a student of Felice Del Santo and Antonio Discovolo. His encounter with Lorenzo Viani was decisive, influencing his expressionist style and his sensitivity to dramatic themes. War Experience: During World War I, he was taken prisoner in Mauthausen. This traumatic experience profoundly marked his art, leading him to paint cycles of darker, more introspective works (such as the famous Erinni), far removed from his luminous seascapes. Futurism and the "Premio del Golfo": In 1933, he participated with aeropittura works in the first "Premio del Golfo" organized by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, demonstrating his ability to engage with the avant-garde movements of the time. The "Painter of the Sea": Despite forays into Futurism and Expressionism, Caselli is primarily remembered for his landscapes of the Gulf of La Spezia, the Cinque Terre, and Lunigiana. It is said that no historic house in La Spezia lacks one of his paintings on its walls. He died in La Spezia in 1976, leaving behind an artistic legacy that continues to define the visual identity of the eastern Ligurian coast.
