Delightful in its craftsmanship and compact size, this antique Louis XV bedside table is entirely veneered in walnut essence. It remains intact in all its components despite its age, a work of Palermitan artisans from the mid-18th century.
The design of the commode faithfully reflects the aesthetic demands of mid-18th-century furniture, eschewing straight lines in favor of the grace of curves, thus appearing dynamic on all three fronts, with cabriole legs and an elegant apron under the doors.
The silhouette of the apron (along with other details, to be precise) unequivocally marks the Sicilian origin of this bedside table. Its appearance is animated and dominated by a vibrant and dynamic marquetry in walnut wood, arranged symmetrically to form a rhomboid pattern on the front of the two doors and the drawer beneath them. The shaped top is enhanced by a beautiful breccia di Aleppo marble slab from the same period. The aforementioned two doors conceal a spacious compartment, and finally, a small drawer centered by a metal pull completes the design at the bottom.
Sicilian cabinetmaking, especially from its main city, Palermo, reached unsurpassed levels in the field of furniture making around the mid-18th century. The latter, receptive to innovations from the rest of the peninsula, knew how to interpret the language of the era by innovating it with highly significant technical and formal solutions that give Sicilian 18th-century furniture its own dignity, even apart from the royal capital, Bourbon Naples.
The great value of a Palermitan 18th-century bedside table lies primarily in its rarity and scarce availability on the antique market. To this, in the case of our commode, are added its excellent state of preservation and the beautiful patina the wood has acquired over the centuries, untouched and unrestored. A piece of furniture delivered to us by history without anyone ever having laid a hand on it.
The beautiful proportions and small dimensions further enhance what has been said so far, characteristics that allow it to be placed even in tighter, smaller spaces and perfectly suited for today's apartments, which are usually of modest size. With your purchase, you will also contribute to valorizing our antique trade, the Italian one, the "made in Italy," that of our unsurpassed and ancient artisans.
