Frank Walters (British, late 19th century) - Highland Cattle at Sunset.
Description:
Frank Walters (British, late 19th century) - Highland Cattle at Sunset. 51 x 76 cm (unframed) - 57 x 82 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame. Work signed lower right: "F. Walters". Frank Walters is a British painter active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, specializing in the depiction of Scottish landscapes and Highland cattle. His work follows in the tradition of British animal art, which in the 19th century had found its most famous exponent in Edwin Landseer. In this painting, three cattle with thick, reddish manes are depicted on the shore of a mountain lake at dusk: the warm, golden light of sunset envelops the entire composition, from the rocky peak in the background to the still water in the foreground, lending the scene a evocative and intimate atmosphere. The rendering of the animals' coats and the reflections on the water reveals a confident technique and a good mastery of raking light. Condition report: Original canvas.
