Carved, lacquered, and faux marble painted wooden frame. Italy, 17th century.
Opening 61 x 71 cm - Rabbet 64.5 x 74.5 cm - Overall dimensions 78 x 88 cm.
Entirely carved, lacquered, and painted wood.
The frame has a box structure, with a gilded half-leaf rabbet that opens onto the central band painted to simulate green Alpi marble. The outer profile, carved with astragals and beads, completes the composition. The technique of marbling on carved frames is well-documented in 17th-century Italian production, particularly within Baroque decoration, where the imitation of precious marbles was functional for achieving spectacular effects at reduced costs.
