Painting of the Madonna with Child and Angels

Oil on canvas. 18th-century Emilian School. The large canvas depicts the Madonna in glory, seated on clouds in the sky, with the Christ Child in her arms; angels and winged putti swirl around her. The entire scene is characterized by light and movement, and an atmosphere of lightness and serenity; the little putti in particular are depicted in joyful and playful attitudes, in contrast to the seriousness, albeit smiling, of the two angels and of Mary and Jesus, engaged in an important symbolic gesture. Indeed, the angel on the right and the two putti below hold "scapulars" in their hands, which are two rectangular pieces of fabric held together by a cord, and they are handing them to Mary. These objects are a devotional sign linked to the Madonna del Carmine (or del Carmelo), one of the oldest and most widespread Marian devotions, linked to the Carmelite Order founded on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land in the 12th century. A symbol of protection and consecration, wearing the scapular – a gesture performed by various religious orders as well as by laypeople – is equivalent to a commitment to live the faith united with Mary, imitating her virtues. The painting therefore celebrates Mary's commitment to take under her protection those who wish to entrust themselves to her. Originating from an important Bolognese collection, the canvas has undergone restoration and relining in the past. Product condition: Product in good condition, shows minor signs of wear.
