Zoomorphic Imari porcelain box in the shape of a duck
Description:
Measurements: height 35 cm x 34 x 24 cm Materials: polychrome porcelain, enamels, gold This refined zoomorphic box represents an exceptional example of Oriental ceramic sculpture, masterfully modeled in porcelain in the shape of a duck or waterfowl. The work is distinguished by a complex volumetric articulation, where the naturalistic rendering of the plumage dialogizes harmoniously with pictorial decoration of extraordinary visual density. The surface is entirely covered by a rich polychromy that skillfully alternates geometric motifs with lobed reserves, within which peonies and chrysanthemums bloom, iconographic elements imbued with symbolic meanings related to nobility and longevity. The color palette adheres to the aesthetic canons of prestigious Imari production, based on the tonal contrast between underglaze cobalt blue, vibrant iron red, and profuse gilding in pure gold. The execution technique is evident in the precision of the lines defining the neck and wings, where the application of enamels follows the animal's anatomical contours, lending it a plastic dynamism of great realism. This artifact, conceived for the export market, testifies to the high level achieved by Japanese manufacturers between the late Meiji period and the beginning of the Taisho era. Stylistically, the object perfectly embodies the aesthetics of late 19th-century Japan, a period when technical skill was combined with a formal search aimed at satisfying the taste of the most demanding Western collectors. The state of conservation is excellent: the brilliance of the glaze appears intact, preserving the vibrancy of the original enamels and the preciousness of the gilding, elements that confirm the integrity and historical-artistic value of this functional sculpture. The work, like all our other objects, will be sold accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. We personally handle and organize the packaging and shipping of our works of art, with insurance, worldwide.
