Description:
In the quiet of a snowy countryside, as evening falls, a woman with a bundle of firewood in her arms returns to her home.
The artist chooses the hour of sunset when the atmosphere enveloping things invites a more intimate conversation with the soul.
While the white of the snow, from which two houses and some trees stand out, accentuates the poetic and silent sense of the scene.
The painting described here fully embraces René Ménard's thought that a landscape painting is not so much a representation of a place, but rather the expression of a human sentiment that draws its emotion from the countryside.
“A landscape painting should not be considered as the representation of a site. It is the expression of a human sentiment, which draws emotions from the countryside”
René Menard: “Gazette des Beaux-Arts” 1870
