Jean Baptiste Caudot (Nancy 1682 - Nancy 1757) - Arcadian landscape with resting figures.
Description:
Jean Baptiste Caudot (Nancy 1682 - Nancy 1757) - Arcadian landscape with resting figures. 54.5 x 73.5 cm (without frame) - 73.5 x 92.5 cm (with frame). Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame. The painting depicts a group of common figures resting along a country path, with ruins and rustic architecture in the background and a hillside village closing the view. In the foreground, two women with baskets are engaged in an animated conversation, while a young man with a wide-brimmed hat is lying on the ground and a child observes the scene. The composition, built on a palette of warm and bright tones, reflects the 18th-century taste for outdoor genre scenes, with lively attention to popular types and the naturalistic rendering of the landscape. The work is attributed to Jean Baptiste Caudot, a painter active in Nancy in the first half of the 18th century, based on stylistic comparisons in the rendering of drapery, the physiognomy of the figures, and the compositional structure.
