Vittorio Matiolin (active in Venice in the early 20th century) - Bragozzi with sails in the lagoon.
Description:
Vittorio Matiolin (active in Venice in the early 20th century) - Bragozzi with sails in the lagoon. 55 x 65 cm (unframed) - 81 x 90 cm (framed). Oil on panel, in a gilded wooden frame. Artwork signed lower left: "Vitt. Matiolin". The painting depicts bragozzi moored in the open lagoon, with large sails unfurled - orange-ochre and green - dominating the foreground composition. To the left, two figures of sailors animate the scene on the edge of the hull. In the background, a expanse of calm, bright water with other sailboats in the distance, rendered with synthetic touches, conveys the vastness of the lagoon on a windy day. The brushwork is loose and constructive, with dense impasto on the sails and a vibrant rendering of reflections on the water, fully in line with early 20th-century Venetian en plein air painting. There is currently no documented biographical information on Vittorio Matiolin; the surname suggests Venetian origins and the date 1920 inscribed on the work places his activity in the same period as the lagoon school of the early 20th century.
