Michelangelo Cerquozzi (Rome 1602 - 1660) circle
Battle Scene
oil on canvas
38 x 48 cm.
with frame 55 x 66 cm.
The compositional and stylistic characteristics of our pleasant battle scene, such as its dramatic intensity and dynamic composition, suggest a close connection with the work of painter Michelangelo Cerquozzi (Rome 1602 – 1660), known as "Michelangelo delle Battaglie" (Michelangelo of Battles) for his mastery in this genre, and one of the most famous exponents of Roman Baroque painting.
Our work, in particular, immortalizes the moment after a clash, with knights about to ascertain the immediate consequences of the battle.
The detail of the background landscape is beautiful, with a city and an ancient hillside fortress that, although difficult to recognize, simultaneously offers a realistic view of the suburban areas of the Eternal City.
Scenes of this type were destined for 17th and 18th-century collections to celebrate not so much grand martial themes, but to decorate noble and bourgeois residences: battle paintings were indeed particularly favored in the Baroque era and were often inspired by military news events, of actual current affairs, in an era of wars and armies that continually violated Italian territory.
The style that emanates from the canvas is a unique fusion of Italian tradition and the influence of Northern painters present in Rome. This mixture is a peculiar characteristic of Cerquozzi's catalogue, who managed to combine the analytical attention to detail typical of the Flemish school with the narrative arrangement and chromatic sensibility of the Roman pictorial tradition.
The work is in good condition, the paint layer is healthy, with some restored areas.
