Immediate circle of Joseph Danhauser. Vienna circa 1820. Splendid chairs with "timeless" design in absolutely intact, museum-quality condition. They even retain their original upholstery and fabric from the period, reflecting a modernity that "conquers time" (see photos), which has been preserved, sanitized, and re-covered with precious anthracite satin (see subsequent photos taken before re-covering). Veneered with blonde walnut burl on a maple wood structure, as was customary in the Danhauser manufactory. Polished with real shellac using a traditional French polish technique on the original patina, executed to museum standards. Provenance: high Austrian nobility. The inset image shows a drawing of a very similar chair by Joseph Danhauser (Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna). Dimensions: height 89 cm, width 45.5 cm, depth 48 cm. Seat dimensions: depth 39 cm, height 49 cm.
Joseph Ulrich Danhauser (1780-1829), a great Viennese cabinetmaker, sculptor, and designer, documented his product range in an extensive illustrated catalog, parts of which (approx. 2,500 pieces) have survived and are now housed in the MAK (Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna). This catalog includes, among others, 153 chair models, 56 sofas, 179 chandelier types, and 124 drapery designs. All these models were consecutively numbered. He boasted a high-ranking clientele from across the Austrian monarchy and Germany. Danhauser's exceptional quality and uniqueness as a furniture creator lie in the harmonious combination of concreteness and abstraction, functionality and emotion. Thus, he assumed the role of mediator between individuality and anonymity and became one of the most important inspirations for the modern avant-garde movement. The Danhauser manufactory was founded in 1814. It is a reference point in the history of design and furniture. Its very rare original creations that have survived are preserved in a few museums, castles, important antique dealers, or prestigious private collections, mostly noble ones. Warm, golden-amber color of the antique patina of blonde walnut with a true shellac French polish finish.
Observe the last photo on this page, which is a fantasy computer simulation where the original works are virtually imagined in a high-end modern interior design context. N.B. The other furnishings in the photo, excluding our original offered works, are not ours/available but are computer-generated simulations. Virtually associated with them, they reveal a stunning "modernity," luminosity, and abstraction of works conceived over two centuries ago. With a great touch of class and elegance to the overall composition. The high Viennese antique cabinetmaking of the Neoclassical period (1770-1830), with its sober and minimalist elegance and precious, light-colored woods, blends very well with the lines of contemporary modern furniture.
