Painting Allegory of Charity Follower of Carlo Cignani
Description:
Oil on canvas. The work is one of various contemporary versions and replicas of a work by Carlo Cignani, which testify to the success the subject had, and is attributable to his workshop or a follower. The allegory of Charity is one of Carlo Cignani's favorite themes, which he depicted multiple times. She is always represented as a nursing woman, often surrounded by numerous children, a symbol of the unconditional love she bestows upon others. In this representation, the woman offers her breast to two older children, while covering the swaddled newborn sleeping in the cradle. The scene is lively and serene, characterized by the naturalness of the gestures, simple but full of tenderness; one of the children holds two cherries in his hand, a symbol of love and sweetness. The painting shows signs of restoration and relining carried out at the end of the 19th century. The frame, gilded and decorated with friezes, is also from this period.
