"Ecce Homo" is the famous phrase spoken by Pontius Pilate when presenting Jesus, scourged and with a crown of thorns on his head, to the crowd of Judeans.
(from the Gospel of John)
This highly evocative painting depicts "Christ Crowned with Thorns" and is one of the most celebrated creations by the great Bolognese master Guido Reni, serving as a model for many contemporary painters.
It is considered among the most significant images in ancient art with a religious subject, to the point of becoming a symbol of Christianity.
Christ's face is alive and expressive, capable of conveying the human suffering of the "God made Man" who raises his eyes and casts a lost gaze towards the Father to implore him in a moment of despair.
Reni's Ecce Homo, in all its variants, achieved immediate enormous success, especially for its particular suitability for private settings for domestic devotion.
In fact, while representing a message of evident drama, it was far from exasperated depictions with Christ's face completely disfigured and covered in blood dripping from the crown of thorns.
An excellent example of this is this work executed by a skilled Emilian artist of the 17th century, who, inspired by Reni's subjects, captured the artistic essence while inserting a completely personal note of lightness into the facial expression.
The author of the painting undoubtedly possesses an excellent hand, imprinting precise and vigorous brushstrokes on the canvas.
By using a strong contrast of light and shadow, with accentuated golden tones, he manages to give the painting an aura of supernatural light.
The work is in perfect condition, complete with an important, thick gilded frame.
