Vienna circa 1820-1825, possibly Joseph Danhauser's workshop or immediate circle. Rare pair of splendid chairs from early Viennese Biedermeier in practically intact condition, consolidated and with a museum-standard French polish finish. Design works that "conquer time" with incredible modernity, akin to the design of the original model by Joseph Danhauser preserved at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. Veneered in cherry burl wood with its first patina, with elegant carved decorative details and inlays. Original upholstery sanitized and reupholstered with luxurious Empire-style fabric. Height 92 cm, depth 47 cm, width 46 cm, seat height 50 cm. In the miniature, the original design by Joseph Danhauser of a very similar chair model, slightly earlier (model 78, circa 1815). It is possible, if not probable, that our chairs are an evolution of this model during the height of the Biedermeier period. Magnificent works with a design that "conquers time" with a sober and elegant line, also excellent for pairing with high-end modern pieces for a unique, exclusive, and refinedly elegant ensemble. With the warm color of the antique cherry patina finished with real French polish.
Joseph Ulrich Danhauser (1780-1829), a great Viennese cabinetmaker, sculptor, and designer, documented his product range in an extensive catalog of drawings, parts of which (approx. 2,500) have survived and are now preserved at the MAK (Austrian Museum of Applied Arts Vienna). This catalog includes, among others, 153 chair models, 56 sofas, 179 types of chandeliers, and 124 curtains. All these models were consecutively numbered. He boasted a high-profile clientele from throughout the Austrian monarchy and Germany. Danhauser's exceptional quality and uniqueness as a furniture creator lie in the harmonious combination of concreteness and abstraction, functionality and emotion. Thus, he assumed the role of a mediator between individuality and anonymity and became one of the most important inspirations for the modern avant-garde movement. The Danhauser manufactory was founded in 1814. It is a point of reference in the history of design and furnishings. His very rare original creations that have survived are preserved in a few museums, castles, prestigious antique dealers, or distinguished private collections, mostly noble ones.
Observe the last photo of this listing, which is a fictional computer simulation where the original artwork is imagined virtually in a high-end modern interior design context. N.B. The other furnishings in the photo, excluding our original work offered, are not ours/available but are computer-simulated. Associated virtually with them, an astonishing "modernity," luminosity, and abstraction emerge from a work conceived over two centuries ago. With a great touch of class and elegance to the ensemble. Old Viennese high cabinetmaking from the Neoclassical period (1770-1830), with its sober and minimalist elegance, made from precious and light woods, pairs very well with the lines of contemporary modern furniture.
