Giuseppe Zais (Forno di Canale 1709 - Treviso 1784) - Landscape with Washerwomen.
Description:
Giuseppe Zais (Forno di Canale 1709 - Treviso 1784) - Landscape with Washerwomen. 41 x 56 cm (unframed) - 49.5 x 64.5 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame. Giuseppe Zais is among the most famous landscape painters of the 18th-century Venetian school, known for his depictions of bucolic scenes with stylized figures of shepherds, flocks, and washerwomen, set in an idyllic rural landscape inspired by the Venetian countryside. He trained in Venice, where he could observe the works of Marco Ricci, from whom he drew clear inspiration, and was a contemporary of Francesco Zuccarelli, from whom he derived the grace that characterizes his most refined works. Zais's style stood out for a more authentically rural depiction of the Arcadian landscape compared to that of his contemporaries: the compositions, although Rococo-inspired, are imbued with a different sense of realism, given by the use of more marked and brownish tones and by a material and pasty application of color. The painting, securely attributable to Giuseppe Zais, depicts a rural landscape enlivened by a group of figures in the foreground: a woman with a basket, a boy bent over the path, and other figures on the slope behind, with a group of cattle in the middle ground. In the background, a village with rural buildings and a tower emerges from the dense vegetation, all rendered with the loose brushwork and the typical brown and earthy palette of the Belluno artist's maturity.
