Giuseppe Zais (Forno di Canale 1709 - Treviso 1784) - Landscape with a procession of knights and a fortress. 37.5 x 97.5 cm (unframed) - 45.5 x 104.5 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame. Giuseppe Zais is among the most celebrated landscape painters of the Venetian school of the 18th century, known for his depictions of bucolic scenes with stylized figures of shepherds, flocks, and washerwomen, set in an idyllic rural landscape inspired by the Veneto countryside. He trained in Venice, where he was able to observe the works of Marco Ricci, from whom he drew evident inspiration, and he was a contemporary of Francesco Zuccarelli, from whom he derived the grace that characterizes his most refined works. Zais's style was distinguished by a more authentically rural representation of the Arcadian landscape than that of his contemporaries: the compositions, although Rococo in inspiration, are pervaded by a different sense of realism, given by the use of more marked and brown tones and by a material and pasty application of color. The painting, confidently attributable to the hand of Giuseppe Zais, is an overdoor of an elongated horizontal format: a procession of knights occupies the entire width of the scene, with three figures on horseback in the center and a group of figures on foot at the sides. To the left stands a fortress with a cylindrical tower, while in the background to the right opens a lakeside landscape with architectural ruins. The ensemble is rendered with the loose brushwork and the typical brown and earthy palette of the Belluno artist's maturity. Condition report: Lined canvas.
