Italian sculptor (16th century) - Saint Robert.
54 x 30 x h 112 cm.
Full-length figure in carved, lacquered, and painted wood.
The sculpture depicts Saint Robert as a full-length standing figure, identified by the inscription at the base "ROBERT..". The saint is depicted in monastic attire, with a veil framing his face and a wide mantle whose drapery falls in ample, fluid folds. His left hand holds an attribute, while his right hand supports a book, following a recurring iconographic type in 16th-century devotional sculpture. The plastic rendering reveals solid technical mastery, with a treatment of volumes that, while retaining elements of late Gothic tradition, updates towards a greater formal simplification of Renaissance taste. The work was likely intended for the liturgical furnishings of a church or private chapel, as a pendant to the figure of Saint Mauro by the same hand.
