Gilded carved wooden console with marble top. Florentine carver after a design by Giovanni Battista Foggini (1655-1725). Florence, 17th-18th century.
Description:
Gilded carved wooden console with marble top. Florentine carver after a design by Giovanni Battista Foggini (1655-1725). Florence, 17th-18th century. 136 x 66 x h 91 cm. Wall console entirely carved in gilded wood, with a polychrome marble top contemporary to the ochre-yellow background with black and gray veining. The structure rests on a single central pedestal in the shape of a winged herm, which supports the wide lower band of the top with its open arms. The figurative motif, attributable to the drawings of Giovanni Battista Foggini, sculptor and court architect to the Medici, is articulated in volutes and foliage of a fully Baroque taste. The under-top band features arched openings on both sides. The base is shaped with a curvilinear plan. The marble top, with a semicircular profile and rounded edges, features particularly decorative radial veining. Condition report: Good general condition.
