Statue “Abundance” – Gio Ponti
A large polychrome decorated earthenware statue, depicting a young woman with a tall, woven wicker basket full of fruit on her head, and two baskets hanging from her arms.
“L’Abbondanza”, as named in the 1930 catalog “Ceramiche moderne d’arte Richard Ginori”, was first presented at the 1927 Monza Biennial Exhibition of Decorative and Industrial Arts, where it was illustrated in the official catalog with the caption “Canefora” (Kneeler).
Extremely rare, it is the tallest of all the sculptures designed by Gio Ponti for Richard Ginori and combines iconographic elements of both subjects identified by the two titles attributed to it. It borrows the motif of the basket on the head from the canefora figures, while the dual load of fruit emphasizes the cornucopia, the traditional attribute of abundance.
San Cristoforo (Milan); circa 1927.
