Madonna and Sleeping Child, Follower of Giovan Battista Salvi called "il Sassoferrato" (1609 - 1685)
Description:
Follower of Giovan Battista Salvi called "il Sassoferrato" (1609 - 1685) MADONNA WITH SLEEPING CHILD Roman painter, 18th century Oil on canvas Measurements: canvas 64 x 50 cm., framed 76 x 62 cm. This delicate depiction of the Madonna adoring the Child exhibits the full human dimension and tenderness of a maternal atmosphere: Mary holds the sleeping child close in a tender embrace; he brushes against her cheek, swaddled and protected by her mantle and even a fold of her veil. The painting style and composition hark back to the circle of Giovan Battista Salvi, il Sassoferrato, who notably distinguished himself with this subject. The Virgin is immortalized in a humble and profoundly earthly pose, depicted with simple white, red, and blue colors and delicate nuances of shading on faces and hands. This iconographic prototype was so successful that it became the model for countless works destined for devotion throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. It was particularly appreciated for private commissions due to its pronounced sweetness and formal perfection, especially in the faces. Born in the Marches, Salvi developed his career in Rome, adhering to the dictates of classicist sacred painting from the Bolognese school of Reni, Carracci, and Domenichino, yet managing to forge his own distinct and recognizable style. In generally very good condition, some small scattered restorations and some slight darkening of the paint surface are noticeable. Framed in a beautiful gilded frame.
