Description George III vermeil silver bowl, Daniel Smith & Robert Sharp, London 1785 The bowl has a rounded and slightly flared shape, resting on a decorated circular foot. The entire surface is embellished with rich repoussé and chased decoration, characterized by: lush floral motifs, with flowers in high relief that create an effect of depth and movement, rocaille cartouches and foliate volutes, which frame and rhythm the surface, and internal and external gilding. The Smith & Sharp partnership is known for the excellent quality of their craftsmanship and their ability to integrate Rococo elements with progressively Neoclassical influences. Objects like this bowl attest to a phase of full maturity in their production. Vermeil silver marked with 4 hallmarks: Maker's mark: Daniel Smith & Robert Sharp Britannia standing: duty drawback mark (Britannia standing) was used on exported goods for which a duty drawback could be obtained from December 1, 1784, to July 24, 1785 Leopard's head with crown: city of London Date letter year: 1785 Dimensions HxWxD 22cm x 41.5cm x 41.5cm Weight 3,114gr Provenance Private collection Condition Slight signs of age-related wear and surface scratches. The 4 hallmarks are present on the side of the body.
