George III vermeil silver bowl, Daniel Smith & Robert Sharp, London 1785
The bowl has a rounded and slightly flared shape, resting on a decorated circular foot. The entire surface is embellished with rich repoussé and chased decoration, characterized by: lush floral motifs, with flowers in high relief that create an effect of depth and movement, rocaille cartouches and foliate volutes, which frame and rhythm the surface, and internal and external gilding.
The Smith & Sharp partnership is known for the excellent quality of their craftsmanship and their ability to integrate Rococo elements with progressively Neoclassical influences. Objects like this bowl attest to a phase of full maturity in their production.
