Plated silver table lighter for cigars, Elkington & Co.
Victorian era, late 19th century.
The lighter consists of a shaped base supporting a central tank decorated with garlands, which terminates in a wick.
The cylindrical side elements served as housings for small rods that were lit by the central flame to then light guests' cigars.
Ebonized wooden base.
Good condition with some traces of oxidation.
Beneath the base are the hallmarks of the English manufacturer Elkington & CO, which was one of the most important British silverware manufacturers, famous for revolutionizing the sector thanks to the invention and refinement of the galvanic technique (electroplating).
Founded in Birmingham in 1824 by brothers George Richards and Henry Elkington, the company dominated the market in the 19th century.
The letters A1 indicate excellent production quality.
The initials with a dedication and the year 1889 are also engraved.
