Vienna circa 1800-1810, possibly Johann Ertl, court cabinetmaker. An extraordinary pair of museum-quality chairs from the early Viennese Empire period with lyre-shaped backs. Works with an incredibly modern line, at the forefront of high Viennese cabinetmaking during the early Empire. Possibly the most beautiful chairs in the Viennese Empire style in existence, when compared to those known in public galleries or published in relevant texts.
They are veneered in mahogany and figured mahogany of two different combined tones, with delicate ebony wood inlays and stringing. Embossed brass motifs of small roses and palmettes. The pieces are in intact condition with a shellac finish applied with a tampon on the original patina, using museum-standard techniques. The upholstery is original, covered in elegant Pompeian green Jaquard fabric with small rose motifs. Published in the catalog of the biennial exhibition Ghota di Parma, November 2018. Dimensions: 92.5 cm height, 46 cm maximum width, 44.5 cm depth, 47 cm seat height.
Observe the second photo on this page, which is a computer-generated simulation imagining the work in a high-end modern interior design context. It highlights an "otherworldly modernity," luminosity, and abstraction for a work conceived over two centuries ago. It adds a great touch of class and elegance to the whole. The high Viennese cabinetmaking of the Neoclassical period (1770-1830), with its sober and minimal elegance and its choice of fine, light-colored woods, blends very well with contemporary modern furniture lines.
Unique pieces, perfect as a focal point for high-level contemporary interiors.
