Oil on canvas, in a contemporary carved wood frame.
Work signed lower right: "V. A. Cargnel".
Vittorio Antonio Cargnel trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, where he was a student of Giacomo Favretto, and developed his landscape sensibility within the tradition of Venetian realism of the late 19th century. His painting is characterized by fluid brushwork, a palette modulated in warm, atmospheric tones, and a rendering of diffused light that combines elements of naturalist tradition with the influence of Lombard landscape painting.
The painting depicts a rural village with a bell tower on the left, along a dirt road enlivened by a few figures. On the right, a large lake opens up, with a solitary figure on the shore, a moored boat, and a mountainous background veiled by sunset light. The presence of a telegraph pole places the scene in a late 19th-century context. The composition reveals Cargnel's ability to combine the naturalistic dimension with an intense atmospheric rendering, dominated here by pinkish and ashy tones that recall the artist's landscape production in the years straddling the two centuries.
