WALNUT CHEST - BERGAMO - 17TH CENTURY  Translated
Description:
Important "Bambocci" Chest - Bergamo Manufactory, 17th Century A splendid example of Lombard cabinetmaking from the full 17th century, this chest embodies the rigorous and monumental taste typical of the Bergamo region. The furniture is made of excellent quality solid walnut, characterized by a warm and deep patina that testifies to its age and integrity. Aesthetic Features and Carving The front is a celebration of Northern Baroque, marked by rich yet balanced decoration: "Bambocci" Pilasters: The corners are adorned with imposing anthropomorphic figures (putti or "bambocci") carved in high relief from solid wood, serving as lateral telamons resting on elegant volutes. Mouldings and Frames: The front panel is divided into three geometric compartments, framed by refined guilloché (braid) work that runs along the entire upper and lower perimeter, enriched with original bronze bosses. Supports: The furniture rests on sturdy stylized lion's paw feet ("ferma" feet), which add momentum to the imposing structure. Hardware and Interior Handles and Escutcheons: There are wrought iron and bronze handles on the sides and front, cast with shell motifs and female figures, consistent with the period and style of the furniture. Interior Compartment: The interior is in excellent condition, lined with yellow damask fabric that protects the original wood. It features the classic small side compartment ("box") typical of 17th-century chests, useful for storing precious objects or perfumes. Technical Analysis Material: Solid walnut. Period: 17th century (circa 1650-1680). Geographic Area: Bergamo / Lombardy, Italy. Condition: Excellent overall condition. The furniture shows normal wear consistent with its age; the back shows authentic signs of old craftsmanship and period nailing. Dimensions: 54 x 161, height 56 cm.
